Brigantia’s Dave Spindley to Captain GB in Basketball World Championships
Brigantia Learning Trust has always taken pride in creating excellence together through a culture of care. Today, we’re delighted to celebrate a colleague who truly embodies that spirit—both for our community and on the global stage.
Dave Spindley, our KS2 Lead at Belong, Learn, Transform, will soon captain the FIMBA Great Britain Men’s Over 55’s basketball team at the World Championships in Switzerland.
Dave’s basketball journey began at 17 while he was in college. Over the next 40 years, he built an impressive career in the sport, playing professionally for Kingston, Derby, Doncaster, and Sheffield. Among his proudest moments was winning the National Cup—a highlight in a career filled with success.
Currently, he plays for Worksop in the Sheffield and Doncaster Leagues, where he continues proving his passion for the game. With a focus on the development team, his role is all about coaching, mentoring, and supporting new and less experienced players.
Standing 6'8" and playing forward/centre, Dave has represented Great Britain at the European Championships in Spain, Portugal, and Italy.
Talking about the championship ahead, Dave said:
“The opportunity to captain my country for the first time is a great honour and I am incredibly grateful to my coach for the opportunity. The Trust has been so supportive, and I am delighted to be able to represent them as I compete on the world stage.”
His leadership on and off the court perfectly exemplifies Brigantia’s values of bold leadership, collaboration, and excellence. With over 20 years of teaching experience, he joined Brigantia Learning Trust in October 2024, where he has been leading our AP upper KS2 group, working with children who need tailored support to succeed.
Speaking about his role, Dave shared, “I’m really looking forward to using my experience to benefit and develop this role, and to support the ongoing development of the provision.”
All of us at Brigantia Learning Trust are incredibly proud of Dave’s achievements. We wish him and the FIMBA GB Men’s Over 55’s team every success as they compete in Switzerland!
